Jeremiah prophesied of a new covenant which would be different from the earlier (Mosaic) covenant (Jer. 31:31-34). Under this new covenant God's law would be inscribed on peoples' minds and hearts and forgiveness of sin would be provided for. During his last Passover meal, Jesus announced that his shed blood would provide the basis for the new covenant (Matt. 26:27-28; Luke 22:20). The author of the book of Hebrews quotes Jeremiah 31:31-34, pointing to Jesus as the mediator of that covenant.
